Westwood Lake Public Beach and Park is a highly sought out destination for members of the Nanaimo community, recreationalists, and tourists wishing to immerse themselves in the forest along the extensive trail system, sit on the beach or swim in the lake.
The lake is bounded by Mt. Benson Regional Park and by residential communities; and is visited daily by many who live in close proximity. Bikers, swimmers, sandcastle builders, walkers, runners, painters and kayakers gravitate to Westwood Lake to spend time outdoors.
The scope of work includes an overall conceptual park masterplan, and Phase 1 detail design and construction which will include the beach front, a new park washroom facility, gathering space with shade elements, trailhead signage, bike facilities, a boat launch, accessible water entry for boaters and swimmers, picnic space supported by food trucks, a boardwalk, tiered decking integrated with planting areas, stormwater management on site, a range of formal and informal seating and playful massive rock slabs for lounging or climbing. Boulders, native plantings, trees, and the integration of wood elements aim to compliment the natural systems embodied by the forest and lake scape.
The conceptual design accounts for the wide variety of observed users and activities, enhances existing experiences and offers new active and passive opportunities. Notably, many individuals with mobility aids use this park and the increased attention to accessibility will be a welcomed enhancement.
