Public space is just that, Public. Our Winter City Design Competition approach sought to offer a young member of the public, Seeton Naested, the opportunity to lead a design and see his vision of winter fun come to life in Calgary’s downtown core.
The City of Calgary’s design brief for the inaugural Winter City Design Competition sought to integrate tactile urbanism and catalyze social interaction on Stephan Ave.
Seeton brought his perspective of play, scale, connection, inclusiveness, and winter fun to the core of the design concept titled, ‘Wowie!!’. The creative energy of this young team member drove the design concept, placement and final touches that would help to make this submission representative what a kid thinks would best activate our public realm. Our collective team supported Seeton in his design visioning through site analysis, workshops, concept development, and professional technical support.
As a winning submission our team was given the go-ahead to construct ‘Wowie’ on Stephan Ave. Pedestrians could interact with the installation through motion and pressure light sensors. When sensors were activated, different light shows were triggered. When all sensors were pressed simultaneously on both sides of the street, users were rewarded with an extensive light show projected into the right-of-way, drawing people into the ‘street’. Some sensors were placed higher and required creative thinking and teamwork to activate them. This puzzle required cooperation and awareness, encouraging connection and communication with friends and strangers.
Platforms surrounding the columns provide opportunities for sitting, perching, and encourage users to step up to experience the atmosphere from a higher vantage point. The platforms were lit throughout the evening with long-lasting glow in the dark paint, creating a warm and vibrant ambiance. Accessible ramps and stairs provide access to different platform levels for all those walking and wheeling by.
