‘Mission’ for Public Seating
‘…the humble bench or chair can be a foundation for almost everything that happens in our public spaces, mostly becuase providing comfortable place to sit is the starting point for the social life we all crave.”
COVID 19 has changed how we interact with our peers, colleagues, friends and family. Outdoor public space provides a place to safely interact with people. The inclusion of public seating will be instrumental to allow and encourage social interaction.
Currently, there is a general lack of public seating along 4th Street SW. The TULA Project is in the early stages of developing a public seating strategy with the City of Calgary and the Cliff Bungalow Community Association. The strategy is to identify underutilized road right of way (ROW) and implement trial seating for observation and input by users, businesses, and stakeholders. This pilot will provide valuable use analysis information, and opportunity for stakeholder engagement which will help guide a framework for success for future permanent installation.
The goal is to develop a permanent public seating strategy and brand for the neighbourhood; and to transform underutilized nooks into healthy, vibrant spaces that provide opportunity for social interaction and passive observation.
Project is ongoing.
